Graham Newman graduated from Sumter High School in 1997 as a Palmetto Fellow and a Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholar. He attended the University of South Carolina Honors College where he graduated in 2001 with a double major in History and English, magna cum laude. While at USC, Graham also was a three-year letterman on the Varsity Track and Field team, a Rhodes Scholar semi-finalist, served as an intern in the South Carolina State Senate, and was named an Outstanding Senior and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation, he received the J. Strom Thurmond Scholarship to the University of South Carolina School of Law where he was awarded a Juris Doctor in 2004.
After law school, Graham clerked for the Honorable Howard P. King, Circuit Judge of the Third Judicial Circuit, from 2004 to 2005. Thereafter he worked for the Sumter County Public Defender Corporation, handling cases ranging from petty theft to murder.
