Trucker Settles For $1.5 Million After Leg Crushed by Forklift

A truck driver whose leg and foot were crushed by a forklift has won a $1.5 million settlement against the Kershaw County wood products company.

The trucker was injured at Conner Industries in Lugoff when a teenage forklift operator knocked him down and backed over his left leg in April 2001. The Sanford, N.C. resident's leg later had to be amputated several inches below the knee. He filed suit in U.S. District Court in Columbia.

A settlement was reached during trial on Dec. 6 - shortly after the forklift operator admitted he had perjured himself on the stand, Columbia attorney Richard A. "Dick" Harpootlian said.

After the forklift operator admitted he had lied to the jury, Conner Industries laid more cash on the settlement table, Harpootlian said.
